Your brain is most impressionable during the first 30–60 minutes after waking.

This means the first things you think, feel, and do set the tone for how your brain and body operate for the rest of the day.

  • Scroll first thing? You train your brain to react all day.

  • Start with a grounding habit? You build self-trust and focus.

And when your mornings are on autopilot chaos, it’s really hard to show up as the version of you who’s trying to grow.

  2. Energized Routine → For when you’re doing well but short on time
    ⚡ Think: Quick movement, top priority planning, affirmations

  3. Bad Mood Routine → For the mornings where you wake up off
    🌧 Uses emotional regulation tools like breathwork or grounding

  4. Burnout Routine → For days when you barely made it out of bed
    🛏 Focuses on one simple baseline habit (e.g., drink water or step outside)


📝 How to Create Your Own 4x4 Routine System

Step 1: Choose Your Baseline Habit
Pick one thing that you can do every morning—no matter what.
Examples:

  • Drink a glass of water

  • Open your planner

  • Step outside and stretch for 2 minutes

This is your anchor.


Step 2: Design Your 4 Routines
Using your baseline as the foundation, build out four variations of your routine.

Here’s an example for someone whose baseline is “open my planner”:

Type Example Routine
Ideal Journal, workout, full planning session
Energized 5-minute stretch, top 3 to-do list, 1 affirmation
Bad Mood Deep breaths, quick emotional check-in in planner
Burnout Open planner, circle one word that describes the day
 

Step 3: Use Your Routine Selector Tool
Every morning, pause and ask:

“How do I feel today?”
Then choose the routine that supports that version of you.

You’re not failing by choosing the easier one—you’re winning by showing up at all.
