šŸŽÆ The Truth About Discipline

(It’s not what you think it is)

Let’s get one thing straight:
Discipline isn’t about white-knuckling your way through life.

It’s not about perfection.
It’s not about self-control.
And it’s definitely not about ignoring your needs.

Real discipline is about self-respect.

It’s about knowing yourself so deeply that you stop letting how you feel in the moment override what you promised yourself in the past.

And when you learn how to do that—everything changes.

šŸŽ¾ Story Time: Serena Williams & Emotional Discipline

There’s a story about Serena Williams that perfectly captures this.

Her coach once asked her how she stayed so focused—even when the crowd was booing, the match was going sideways, and her emotions were screaming at her to give up.

She said:

ā€œI made the decision to win before I stepped onto the court.ā€

She wasn’t waiting to feel like a winner.
She had already decided who she was going to be—long before the match began.

That’s discipline.

Not a fight with herself.
Not a motivational pep talk.
Just alignment with the identity she had already chosen.

🧠 Discipline = Identity in Action

Most people think discipline means fighting against themselves.

But what if discipline is just… being congruent with who you’ve decided to be?

You don’t have to force yourself to wake up early if you already see yourself as the kind of person who honors her mornings.
You don’t have to talk yourself into eating healthy if it’s already part of who you are.

You just have to stop giving your feelings more power than your choices.

āœļø Here’s How to Build That Kind of Discipline

Discipline isn’t something you get.
It’s something you become.

Here’s a simple self-alignment process to start building it:

1. Decide Who You Are Becoming

Ask yourself:

ā€œIf I was already the version of me I want to be… what would I believe about myself?ā€

Write down 3 identity statements:
🟔 I am someone who keeps my word
🟔 I am someone who prioritizes rest and movement
🟔 I am someone who shows up—even on the hard days

2. Define What That Person Does

Get specific:
What does she do on a normal Tuesday?
What does she not do when she’s tired, stressed, or bored?

Create a ā€œDo & Don’tā€ list based on your ideal self—not your current mood.

3. Build a System That Makes It Easier to Win

Self-trust builds when you stop setting yourself up to fail.

Instead of saying ā€œI’ll wake up at 5am every day,ā€
ask: ā€œWhat’s the smallest version of this habit I can actually follow through on?ā€

Discipline is easier when your goals respect your energy.

4. Pre-Decide How You’ll Show Up When You Don’t Feel Like It

This is the key.

Serena didn’t wait to feel like a champion—she decided before the pressure hit.

Do the same.

  • What will I do when I’m tired?

  • What will I do when I want to quit?

  • What will I not negotiate with myself about?

That’s emotional discipline.
And that’s where the transformation happens.

šŸ’¬ Final Thought

You’re not flaky.
You’re not lazy.
You’re not inconsistent.

You just haven’t been clear enough about who you are becoming.

Start there.
The discipline will follow.
